Congratulations! You’re earned the keys to a car!

This is a very exciting time for you.  For most parents, it’s the cause for genuine concern and many sleepless nights.  You may wonder why.

2,121 people between the ages of 15-18 were killed in crashes.  In fact, statistics show that half of all teens will be involved in a car crash before graduating from high school. That’s a staggering and unnerving statistic!

You probably believe that you’re a good driver - and you probably are.  The fact is, young drivers are inexperienced. It’s driving experience, and good driving habits that helps you develop sharper skills to better judge gaps in traffic, driving the right speed for conditions and turning safely, among other things. Remember, cars don’t cause crashes, people do.

Driving is a privilege and with that comes responsibility.  So, before you jump to the conclusion that your parents are being unreasonable, remember that they love you.  Your safety has been their priority since the day you were born.

National Safety Council has developed a step-by-step guide for you and your parents to help keep you and others safe.

PS - don't forget to say thanks for the keys!
